How to Keep Your Sewer System in Good Shape

There are few things in life worse than a problem with your sewer system. It can be a stinky mess, and it can sometimes get quite expensive to repair it. However, there are some things you can do to avoid sewer system repair in your Twin Cities home, so here are a few suggestions.

The most common reason we are called for sewer system repair is when a tree root has infiltrated the system and caused a hole in the pipes. Sometimes, there isn’t much you can do to prevent this, especially if the tree has already been planted. But if you are thinking about planting any new trees in your yard, be sure you figure out where your sewer pipes run before deciding on where to have them planted. You can avoid sewer system repair if you plant trees well away from your sewer lines. That way, the root system can grow as big as it needs to and you won’t have to worry about having your sewer system repaired or replaced.

Another thing you can do to avoid sewer system repair is to make sure everyone in your home abides by this rule: nothing gets flushed down the toilets besides human waste and toilet paper. If anything else is flushed, it can cause sewer system problems. While it is tempting to flush hair, paper towels, gum, food and other similar items, please refrain from doing so. Make sure those items go into the trash can or the recycling bin and not in your toilets!

These items can cause the system to back up, and you might even have to spring to get other parts of your house repaired. For example, the back-up could cause sewage to back up into your home, and that can be a very expensive problem to have. Not only will you need to hire a sewer system repair company to come to your home, but you might also have to hire a professional cleaning service to safely and thoroughly clean up the sewage and mess that is left behind.

These are just a few suggestions to avoid sewer system repair. Call us and we can tell you even more!

Four Benefits of Sewer Lining

Sewer lining in St Paul is one of the best ways to repair your sewer lines when you are experiencing trouble with them. There are several different benefits that sewer lining offers when it comes to repairs and replacements (over traditional sewer repairs). Here are a few of our favorites:

Sewer lining is more cost effective than any other type of sewer repair. Not only do you not have to worry about having your yard and garden (and possibly your driveway) dug up (and then repaired or replaced after the sewer repair work is done), but the work itself is usually more cost-effective because we will not need to bring in backhoes and other expensive equipment to do the work.

You will also avoid problems to your home’s foundation, and you will not have to worry about piles of excavated dirt to get rid of after the repair work is completed. Also, you will not have to worry about tying up traffic in your neighborhood just so the sewer repair company can do their work. You avoid a lot of stress and hassle when you look into sewer lining and having that done instead of traditional repair work.

Sewer lining can be done on lateral, horizontal and vertical pipes, and it can be done to all different sewer pipes, no matter how many angles and bends there are in your sewer piping system. There are some restrictions on where this can be done because of local codes and regulations, but if none of those apply to you, then we can certainly offer our sewer lining services to you.

You might notice some improvements in your sewer system after you have sewer lining done. Sewer lining can help prevent the onset of tree root intrusion, and it can actually increase the pipe’s capacity for flow. It helps to stop leaks before they occur, and it can actually help increase the structural strength of new pipes too. The life expectancy of these types of pipes is 50 years.

These are just a handful of reasons you should go with sewer lining over traditional sewer repairs. Call us and we can give you even more reasons to choose our sewer lining repair services!

Winterizing Your Septic System

If you own a summer house or cabin, now is the time to start thinking about winterizing the sewer system if you don’t plan to regularly use it this winter. If you do not winterize it, you could end up with a stinky mess next spring that could require a lot of time, money and hassle to fix. We can help with sewer replacement in Robbinsdale and the surrounding areas, but we would obviously prefer to help you avoid the expense and hassle associated with this if we can! So here are a few ways you can keep your sewer system in good shape this winter, especially if you will not be using it for a few months.

It might seem logical to put antifreeze in your summer home’s pipes and plumbing system, but this is a really bad idea and could lead to the need for sewer replacement. Instead, drain out all of the house’s water supplies. First, shut off the main water supply where it enters the house. Make sure the pump is drained by turning it on and letting it run for a couple of seconds to ensure all of the water is out.

Turn on all of the faucets in the home and leave them on, and then completely drain the pressure tank. Flush all of the toilets too. You can use an RV antifreeze in the tanks, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommended dilution level.

After making sure all of the other pipes and hoses are fully drained, you should then turn off the water pump’s electrical source to ensure no water inadvertently enters the system while the cabin is not in use.

If you know you definitely will not be using your cabin or summer home until next spring, now is a good time to have the septic tank pumped. If the cabin is in an area that is known to have below freezing temperatures during the winter, then the sewage that is left in the system could freeze, and that could lead to expensive sewer repair or sewer replacement.

A clean and empty sewer tank is a better way of starting off your spring and summer vacation seasons.

Seven Signs You Need Sewer Repairs

You always want to be sure that the water and sewer systems at your New Hope home are in good shape. They are what carry your family’s waste out of your home and into your septic tank or into a public sewage system, so it is safe to say these systems are an incredibly crucial part of your home. If you suspect your home’s sewer system is in need of some work, there are some telltale signs you can watch out for.

  • Take a look at the toilets in your home. Keep an eye on the water levels. If the levels are suddenly too high or too low, or they seem to change throughout the day even when no one has flushed them, you should get your water and sewer systems looked at.
  • If you use a water-using appliance and your toilets or drains start to gurgle, this is another indication that you should call us for sewer repairs.
  • Are the other drains in your home backed up for no apparent reason? Or maybe they are all draining much slower than usual? If the answer is yes to either of these, then you should call us for help with your water and sewer systems. This is generally one of the best indications there is a problem.
  • Another sign of a problem with your water and sewer systems is if you are noticing a strange new odor in your home. This smell could permeate your home or the outside areas immediately surrounding your house.
  • Go to your basement or the lowest level of your home and take a look at the drains there. If you are seeing any signs of water build up or stains, call us because this is yet another indication that your water and sewer systems are in need of some work.
  • Then take a walk around the perimeter of your home: both outside and inside. If you see any water stains or other signs of water damage, again, this is a good time to call us for help with your water and sewer systems.
  • Finally, if you are noticing an increase in mice and other rodents in and around your home, call us for help. A broken sewer line can sometimes attract these critters to your house.

FAQs about Sewer System Replacement

As a company that offers sewer system replacement in Crystal and the surrounding areas, we often hear the same questions from our customers before, during and after the replacement process. So we thought we would take the time to answer the ones we hear the most often.

Q: I keep hearing about trenchless sewer repairs. What are they and why are they so popular?

A: Trenchless sewer repair is becoming more and more popular as more homeowners learn about what it is. It is basically the only true “no dig” technology where a resin-based liner is pulled through your existing pipes. It is then “inflated” using special equipment and it will then adhere to the old pipe, filling in cracks and other small fissures. This is a great way to avoid digging up your lawn, grass, driveway and landscaping when you need a sewer system replacement or repair done.

Q: What are some common reasons people call you for help with sewer system replacement?

A: Some of the biggest culprits when it comes to damaging your sewer system are tree roots. They can grow into your pipes and cause them to crack, which can then cause a leak or other issues. When you are planting new trees, make sure you figure out where your sewer system is and plant them as far from them as possible. You should also have your sewer system and pipes cleaned out on a regular basis.

Q: What are some ways I can avoid sewer system replacement or, at the very least, avoid it for as long as possible?

A: As we mentioned before, watch where you plant trees and other plants with extensive root systems. Make sure your sewer pipes are professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Also, make sure you do not flush anything down your toilets besides human waste and toilet paper. If anything else is flushed on a regular basis, it can cause problems with your system and could eventually lead to the need for sewer system replacement.

These are only three of the questions we hear the most about sewer system replacement and repair. Do not hesitate to contact us to learn more or to ask a question that was not on this list!
