Sewer Repair Material Options

Sewer repair is not something one wants to deal with under the best if circumstances. It is messy, can take a day or two to deal with and expensive. However, it can be a necessary evil for property owners. In years past, the types of material used for sewer/plumbing were somewhat limited, but today there is a variety of choices available when installing new or making sewer repairs. Each of them have their own pros and cons, so if dealing with sewer repair is something you are facing, or perhaps hoping to avoid, then being aware of your options, is important. Here is a list of the more common sewer repair or installation choices.

  • Cast Iron – As one of the oldest materials used in sewer lines and plumbing, cast iron is still used from time to time but it is more commonly found in many historic buildings and older construction.
  • Copper – This is still considered the standard in sewer repair and installation as it is a softer material, making it easier to manipulate; it is non-toxic for people and animals, and does not corrode. There are three types of copper piping used (L, M and K); type is based on the job being done. Most common for above the ground sewer repair and installation is Type M as it is the thinnest, while L and K are thicker and are better for in the ground sewer concerns.
  • Lead – Because lead has been found to be toxic, it is never used in new construction and in buildings or homes where lead pipes have been used; they are commonly replaced as part of a sewer repair job.
  • Plastic – This is perhaps the most recent sewer repair choice available. Although there are some sewer repair professionals who do not like it, plastic is still a popular choice as it is less costly, doesn’t corrode and easier to cut than copper; however, if not installed properly it can crack or break, so be sure that it is professionally installed rather than taking it on as  a DIY project.
  • Steel – Another common material once used in sewer repair and installation is galvanized steel. It was used because of the zinc coating which served as rust preventative. However, because of issues such as flaking on the interior of the pipe’s walls versus the many advantages of copper of plastic, steel is slowly becoming a rare choice in sewer repair or installation.
As you can see, the choices in sewer repair are varied. Consequently, it is best to leave that determination to the professionals.
