How to Prevent Frozen Pipes this Winter
It might be hard
to believe, but winter is right around the corner and with it comes a variety
of concerns such as pipes freezing and then bursting. We specialize in helping
with sewer
lining in Minneapolis MN and the surrounding areas, but we thought we would
take the time to discuss how to prevent frozen pipes.
The first thing
you should do is turn off any outside water lines. Take your garden hose, if
you have one, and remove it from the hose bibb. Drain the hose in your garden
or shed and then make sure the interior shut off valve is fully closed.
Pipes that run
along exterior walls are especially at risk of freezing. Get a professional
insulation company to assess your home’s insulation and get more added if it’s
necessary.
Flush your
home’s hot water tank to help remove sediment. That helps the tank work more
efficiently. It will have to work harder in the winter than in the summer
simply because the water flowing into it is colder, so it takes more effort on
the water heater’s part to get that water nice and hot.
Don’t forget
about your sewer either! Partially plugged or clogged sewers can easily get
frozen during the winter time. This can cause a variety of problems, and you
might need to contact us about sewer lining if your sewer pipes crack or break.
Make sure your
house’s foundation and crawl space vents are closed. This will help keep the
cold air from freezing pipes. You should also be sure that any irrigation
systems at your home are winterized. A professional irrigation company should
come to your home for a fall blow out. This is where they blow all of the air
out of the irrigation system with compressed air.
Your main sewer
line should be open and flowing, and this is especially for an overhead sewer
or septic system. You should also have your septic tank serviced every three to
five years to ensure the incoming line does not freeze or back up.
Finally, keep an
eye on your sewer lines and all of your pipes and if any of them seem to be
backing up or experiencing problems, call in professionals for help.
